Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of various acidic solutions on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets to enamel surfaces. The upper premolar brackets were bonded with Tansbond XT to 120 extracted human premolar teeth and divided equally into four groups, that were, Coca-Cola, Orange juice, Listerine¢ç and distilled water as a control group. All groups were conditioned for three 5-minute sessions with equal intervening intervals for 90 d ays. I nitial pH, shear b ond strength, and mod ified adhesive remnant index of the groups were analysed statistically (a=0.05). The results were obtained as follows : 1. There was a relationship between the initial pH of the tested solutions and the shear bond strength of the orthodontic brackets after exposure to the acidic solutions (p<0.05). 2.Coca-Cola, which has a high level acidity, had significantly lower shear bond strength than the control group (p<0.05). 3. Orange juice and Listerine¢ç, which have a low level acidity, do not seem to have a destructive potential on the bond strength of orthodontic brackets (p>0.05). 4. There was no significant correlation between the shear bond strength and the modified adhesive remnant index scores of the acidic solution groups (p>0.05).
